Martin Head, Chief Executive of the Suffolk Football Association, and James Hehir, Chief Executive of Ipswich Borough Council, both played in the Ipswich Inter-firm Cup (well let’s just say many years ago) and will be at Whitton Sports Centre next week to bring it back to life almost a decade after the last game.
Mr Hehir said: “This was always an important event in the local soccer calendar and I am so pleased that the Borough Council’s Team Ipswich initiative has got together with the Suffolk FA to re-launch it. I can remember playing in several matches when I first returned to Ipswich and I am now looking forward to seeing some action again – but from the sidelines!”
Mr Head said: Whilst working for Ransomes I played in a final at Portman Road against the “Dock Commission” and although I believe we lost, it was a great experience, gained playing in what was recognised as a prestigious competition. One of my current working targets is to get as many people as possible playing football. The re-introduction of the Inter–firm Cup will help with that giving people the opportunity to play in an enjoyable competition. I congratulate James Payne (Suffolk FA) and Jonathan Stephenson (Team Ipswich) on making this possible.
The competition is an 11-a-side knock-out competition where companies and other organisations compete to become the elite business footballing team within Ipswich. Teams will start their fixtures in September, hopefully progressing to a final in May. Previous finals have taken place at Portman Rd negotiations are taking place.
The competition brings people together to play and promote sport and has also created an important business network to support the town’s economic growth.
