About Team Ipswich

Team Ipswich is for the whole Ipswich community. It is a visionary approach to sports development that is being recognised nationally as an innovative model.

The model was created by Ipswich Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit. It is Ipswich’s innovative local answer to national and regional sport strategies including 'Game Plan', 'The Framework for Sport in England' and 'The East of England Plan for Sport'.

It is also compatible with Ipswich Borough Council’s corporate plan, ‘Transforming Ipswich’, which identified the need to work with a range of partners in order to realise the wider community benefits that participation in sport can bring.

Team Ipswich was launched in 2005 by Ipswich Borough Council when it appointed Olympic swimmer Karen Pickering MBE as Sports Ambassador to Ipswich.

Team Ipswich’s four main objectives are:

  • To support clubs and individuals to succeed competitively

  • To increase club membership

  • To raise the profile of Ipswich through our sporting achievers

  • To generate community pride in sport

Headline achievements to date include:

  • Increased sporting opportunities

  • Increased funding into sport

  • Increased profile for sport and its benefits

  • Increased partnership working

  • Widespread support from key individuals and agencies
